The UK's telephone numbering system is being reorganised. It's the biggest and most important change ever undertaken.

Why are these changes necessary?

The recent explosion in voice and data communications has meant that the UK's numbering system needs to be reorganised if it is to continue to work successfully. Oftel, the UK Telecoms regulator, has introduced the changes. When completed, our numbering system in the UK will become simple and easier to use. Similar types of numbers will be grouped together with the same codes.

How is your mobile phone number going to be changing?

All mobile phones, pager numbers and personal numbers are now being grouped together to start with the same two digits: 07. Some numbers already begin 07, but if yours doesn't, then, the below tables can help you work out how your mobile number will change. If you have an existing number for a mobile phone that does not begin with 07, the prefix will change according to the table shown:

When will the numbers change?

Callers can already reach you by dialling your new number, however your existing number will continue to operate until April 2001. So there is plenty of time to prepare for the change.
